Anne Shongwe Founder & CEO of Afroes TransformationalIn 2008 SANBI leadership identified bedeviling issues of class, race, ethnicity, and disparate age, skills, traditions, and history (from garden workers to world-renowned scientists, and everybody in-between) in an organization situated in nine campuses across the country, and took the decision to seek help in the form of the Technical Assistance Unit (TAU) of the National Treasury. Ultimately it was the need to improve leadership at all levels that were most starkly highlighted through this process. The leadership training and coaching has been invaluable in fostering change in the organization and has had a noticeable impact on the morale and team spirit of the executive leadership of SANBI. We intend to roll out this coaching and training to our management levels in the near future, cascading the invaluable insights and approaches throughout the organization to give us the backbone to deliver our mandate and obligations in the most productive and efficient way possible.

Managers report “improved listening skills, improved relations with team-members, which help to resolve issues at work and at home”. Facilitating the shift from being a group of individuals who merely attended meetings together, to becoming a team working together towards a common vision and common outcomes. The team coaching was a catalyst in creating a supportive, learning and growing environment for each of the team members within their teams to operate from. Identifying the Vision and purpose of each team, as well as the group of people who belonged together within each group, helped to create the fuel for teams to unleash their high performance potential. As a result, there is a new synergy in the organization, and EXCO team members report that “the whole is now more than the sum of the parts”. The sharing of individual values within the team made all realise that team members are not just coming to work for work’s sake, but are driven by their values, and a common value to make a difference and leave a legacy. This helped unite and energise the teams. Providing various tools for the organization, including those needed to have difficult and confrontational conversations, proved useful and supported teams in increasing performance within their teams.
